Diving in Candidasa – Advanced Diving in Bali

Discover diving in Candidasa, one of Bali’s most exciting areas for experienced divers. The dive sites feature dramatic underwater landscapes, deep walls and strong currents. Marine encounters can include reef sharks and, during the right season and conditions, mola mola.

The main dive sites include Gili Biaha, Taked, Gili Tepekong and Gili Mimpang, each offering a different underwater landscape and diving experience.

Why Choose Diving in Candidasa?

The Candidasa diving area includes Gili Biaha, Taked, Gili Tepekong and Gili Mimpang. Together, these sites offer some of Bali’s most dramatic underwater scenery, with volcanic rock formations, deep walls, swim-throughs, caves and coral reefs.

Marine life can be equally impressive. Whitetip reef sharks are resident in the area, while large schools of fish, turtles and other marine life can be encountered around the reefs. During the right season and conditions, divers may also encounter mola mola.

Highlights of diving in Candidasa:

  • Spectacular underwater topography and coral formations.
  • Opportunities to encounter mola mola during the right season and conditions.
  • Encounters with reef sharks and other pelagic marine life.
  • Deep walls, swim-throughs and technically demanding dives in areas affected by strong currents.

Requirements for Diving in Candidasa

The Candidasa dive sites are best suited to experienced divers with good buoyancy control, good air management and experience in currents. Many dives follow specific routes through complex underwater topography, making it important to stay close to the guide.

✅  Advanced divers only: experience diving in currents and good buoyancy control are required.

⚠️ Check dive required: before diving at the Candidasa islands, we require a check dive to assess the diver’s experience, comfort, buoyancy control and ability to manage currents.

☑️ Nitrox recommended: when doing two dives around the islands, we recommend diving with Nitrox to help manage the dive profiles safely and comfortably.

💎 Deep diving: when sea conditions are suitable, the Candidasa area provides excellent opportunities for advanced deep-diving training up to 40 and 60 meters.

Best dive sites for diving in Candidasa

1. Gili Biaha: Shark Cave and Deep Walls

Shark cave – Gili Biaha

Gili Biaha is one of Candidasa’s most distinctive dive sites. Located offshore near Virgin Beach, this small volcanic island offers dramatic underwater scenery, steep walls descending beyond 80 meters and the famous Shark Cave.

Shark Cave

The Shark Cave is one of the highlights of diving at Gili Biaha. Divers can often see whitetip reef sharks resting inside. The entrance also provides a spectacular view into the deep blue beyond the cave.

Divers may also encounter flashlight fish inside the cave. These unusual fish have bioluminescent organs beneath their eyes, which create small flashes of light in the darkness.

Conditions inside the cave require particular attention. Ocean swell can create noticeable pressure changes. Divers therefore need good equalization and buoyancy control. They should also stay close to the guide.

One of the most memorable views comes from looking out of the cave toward the blue. Reef sharks may pass across the entrance and create impressive silhouettes against the open water.

During the mola mola season, Gili Biaha may also offer opportunities to encounter mola mola when conditions are suitable. We can never guarantee these encounters. However, seeing a mola mola can make an already spectacular dive even more memorable.

2. Taked: Shark Cave and Strong Currents

Taked is a distinctive dive site located between Gili Biaha and Gili Tepekong. The dive begins over a submerged platform at approximately 12 meters, where divers can follow the current until reaching the edge of the wall.

From there, the dive descends along the wall toward a cave at approximately 25 meters. The cave has two chambers and is one of the main highlights of the site. Whitetip reef sharks often rest inside the cave, while marble rays may also appear during the right season and conditions.

After exploring the cave, the dive continues along an impressive reef with dramatic walls and abundant coral. Strong currents can affect the site, adding to the technical nature of the dive.

With its submerged platform, deep wall, two-chamber shark cave and beautiful reef, Taked adds another very different underwater landscape to diving in Candidasa.

3. Gili Tepekong: The Blue Hole, Shark Nursery, and The Canyon

Gili Tepekong is one of Candidasa’s most impressive dive sites and is particularly suited to experienced divers. Its dramatic underwater topography includes deep walls, large rock formations, swim-throughs and several distinctive areas, including The Blue Hole, the Shark Nursery and The Canyon.

Currents around the island can be strong and conditions may change quickly, making good buoyancy control, experience in currents and close attention to the guide essential.

The Blue Hole

Blue Hole – Gili Tepekong

The Blue Hole is a swim-through that begins at approximately 16 meters and opens at around 28 meters, leading divers toward a dramatic deep wall that descends beyond 80 meters.

Whitetip reef sharks sometimes rest in this area, and during the mola mola season, divers may also encounter mola mola when conditions are suitable.

Because of its depth, topography and the possibility of strong currents, diving the Blue Hole requires appropriate experience and careful attention to the dive plan and guide.

Shark Nursery

On the northern side of Gili Tepekong, large underwater boulders create a distinctive area known as the Shark Nursery. Juvenile reef sharks can often be seen swimming among the rocks and using the surrounding formations as shelter.

The massive boulders create an impressive underwater landscape, with passages and spaces between the rocks that make this part of Gili Tepekong particularly interesting to explore.

As elsewhere around the Candidasa islands, conditions and currents can change quickly, so divers need to stay close to the guide and follow the planned route through the site.

The Canyon

The Canyon, on the western side of Gili Tepekong, is one of the most spectacular dive sites in Candidasa. It is also one of the most technically demanding. The dive follows a steep wall southward before reaching the canyon itself. Massive rock formations begin at around 20 meters and descend beyond 60 meters.

Depending on conditions, divers may encounter large schools of fish, whitetip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and, during the right season, mola mola. The combination of depth, currents and dramatic underwater topography makes this an exceptional site for experienced divers.

When conditions and diver experience allow, the dive can continue from the Canyon toward Secret Island. This submerged pinnacle is surrounded by coral and marine life.

Visibility can be excellent and reveal the scale of the deep walls, rock formations and open blue. However, currents in this area can be strong and complex. Divers must maintain the correct route and stay close to the guide. This helps prevent the current from carrying them away from the dive site.

4. Gili Mimpang: Thrilling Currents and Abundant Marine Life

Gili Mimpang is a small archipelago of rocky islets offering dramatic underwater scenery and rich marine life. Its reefs, rock formations and deeper areas make it one of the most interesting dive sites around Candidasa.

Like the other Candidasa dive sites, Gili Mimpang can be affected by strong and changing currents. It is therefore best suited to experienced divers with good buoyancy control, good air management and the ability to stay close to the guide and follow the planned route.

What to Expect When Diving in Candidasa

The volcanic landscape around the Candidasa islands creates a varied underwater environment of coral reefs, walls, rock formations, swim-throughs and deeper areas.

Marine life includes resident whitetip reef sharks, schools of reef fish, sea turtles and occasionally wobbegong sharks. Bannerfish and butterflyfish can also be seen around cleaning stations used by mola mola.
During the season of colder currents, mola mola may move into recreational diving depths, adding another possibility to an already diverse range of marine encounters.

Mola Mola Encounters diving in Candidasa

During the season of colder currents, mola mola may be encountered at any of the Candidasa dive sites, sometimes near cleaning stations. Sightings depend on water temperature, currents and sea conditions and can never be guaranteed.

If you encounter a mola mola, remain calm, maintain good buoyancy and avoid approaching or chasing it. Giving the animal space often results in a longer and more natural encounter.

Strong Currents and Safety

Currents around the Candidasa islands can be strong, complex and change direction during a dive. These are not typical drift dives where divers simply follow the current. Many dives follow specific routes through the underwater topography, so maintaining the correct position and staying close to the guide are essential.

Local knowledge is particularly important in Candidasa. Our guides know the topography and routes of these dive sites in detail and adapt each dive to the conditions on the day.

Safety always determines the final dive plan. If currents or sea conditions are unsuitable, we may change the route, choose another dive site or postpone a particular dive.
