How do we organize a DSD at Southern Dreams Diving Club?

When you book your Discover Scuba Diving Program (DSD), we’ll meet you at the diving center at 8:00 AM. If you’re staying in Candidasa or Manggis, we’ll pick you up at your hotel or villa. If you’re in another part of the island, we can arrange a car to pick you up at an additional cost, depending on the distance. Alternatively, you can come on your own.

After two dives in the sea, we typically finish our diving sessions between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. To cap off the experience, we share a meal and discuss our sensations from the unforgettable day.

You’re in Bali for your first diving experience, so there’s no need to rush. Our top priority is ensuring you enjoy the day safely and at your own pace.n, and we’ll wait for you at SDDC.

Getting ready for a DSD

Upon arrival at the SDDC, you will be introduced to the center’s staff and potential companions for the day.

And you will meet your instructor. It is very important to communicate any doubts, nerves, or concerns about diving with your instructor and to trust them completely from the start.

When you enroll in a DSD program you will need to read and fill out some paperwork. Don’t worry, this is a necessary step required by Indonesian law (and in most countries) for any risky activity. The paperwork is an informed consent form, which acknowledges that you are voluntarily choosing to participate in this adventure activity. Additionally, you will need to complete a medical questionnaire.

Next, you will proceed to try on the diving equipment that you will use that day.

Don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed while trying on the wetsuit for the first time. It’s normal to struggle a bit. Fortunately, we’re lucky enough to dive with 3 mm suits in Bali, where the average water temperature is 28 degrees! These suits are highly elastic and more comfortable to put on.

We are ready, and your adventure is about to begin! You are going to do your DSD

Once we have all the equipment prepared and the paperwork done, we go to the dive spot with the best sea conditions that day. We leave the diving center by van to the diving point where we have the best sea conditions that day. Depending on where we dive, the trip can last from 10 minutes to a maximum of 1 hour. Along the way you can enjoy beautiful scenery, see the volcano, coconut trees, monkeys and rice fields in this part of the island.

Once there, we will give you a briefing and explain some exercises we will practice on the surface before making the first dive. Among other things, we will talk to you about:

  • Diving equipment, how it works, and what it is for (they are very logical and easy to understand things).
  • The basic rules of diving for a safe experience are very easy and will practically come out on your own.
  • How to communicate underwater. We speak with very simple and fun signs of signs. If there is something that we don’t know how to say, we can also write on a tablet that we can use underwater. Yes, you read that right, and we can write underwater!
  • Safety procedures.
  • Finally, it will explain and show you how the most common eventualities are solved underwater without having to go up to the surface.

We start practicing exercises on the surface.

Once we have understood all the explanations and resolved all the doubts, it is time to go to the water and begin the try dive.

We always start the DSD program in shallow water. It depends on where we dive, whether we enter the water from the beach or from the boat. The first thing you will do is breathe at the surface, with your head in the water while you float with your full vest as a life jacket, as if you were snorkeling. It is very easy, but we need to get used to this new sensation and we are always by your side at all times. You will also get a chance to practice some basic and simple exercises on the surface until you feel entirely comfortable. We want you to know that there is no need to rush because you have an instructor just for you! So, don’t get overwhelmed and take your time until you are truly comfortable.

We begin the descent. Let’s go diving!

As you prepare to descend, get ready to experience the thrill of your first dive. This moment will be unforgettable and will stay with you for a lifetime. Embrace the nerves and feel the magic unfold as you explore the underwater world.

When it’s time for your first dive, get ready to have some fun! As you start to go down, you might feel a bit nervous, but that’s totally normal. Once you’re in, you’ll experience something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. There’s nothing quite like it, so enjoy every moment!

The first dive can last between approximately 30 minutes and an hour. It always depends on you and how you feel. Remember that today is your day, and you decide,  we are the ones who adapt to you.

At the end of the first dive we relax on the beach or on the boat for approximately an hour, while we have tea or coffee and some snacks. It’s time to talk about how everything went, how you feel, relax and prepare for the second dive.

At this moment, you have already overcome your first fears, you have enjoyed your first underwater experience, you feel comfortable, and you can enjoy your second dive even more!

When we finish the second dive, we collect all the equipment, change, and enjoy a meal together while discussing all the day’s emotions. Finally, we all return together to the diving center. You have the rest of the day to relax and remember this experience, your first DSD in Bali.

Try dive. FAQs

Try dive. Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to know how to swim to try diving?

Having some basic swimming skills is handy while engaging in a try dive. It suggests that you are familiar with water and can make it easier for you while you feel more comfortable underwater.

Having some basic swimming skills is handy while engaging in a try dive. It suggests that you are familiar with water and can make it easier for you while you feel more comfortable underwater.

It’s important to start with small steps and work your way up instead of diving headfirst into something that may be too overwhelming. I’m sure that if you take the time to learn how to swim and start practicing snorkeling, you’ll enjoy your dive even more!

How many students will we go with the instructor?

At Southern Dreams, we work privately to ensure you can enjoy your experience safely and at your own pace.

The ratio for Discover Scuba Diving at Southern Dreams Diving Club is 1 instructor: 1 student.

If you come with a friend or family member and want to try diving together, you will each have an instructor. That way, you can also enjoy the experience together but in complete safety, each one supervised by a professional.

What do I need to bring to do my try dive?

A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, dry clothes to change into when we’re done, and a towel. Everything else we provide it!

How deep will I go for my first dive?

Children 8 and 9 years old can reach a maximum depth of 4 meters. From age 10, the maximum depth for DSD is 12 meters.

These are simply the maximum limits. The important thing is not how deep you go but that you always feel comfortable. The good thing is that in Bali, you can see fish and marine life even at very shallow depths.

Is lunch included?

Yes, at Southern Dreams Diving Club, we all eat together at a local restaurant after doing the dives. You have a menu to choose from what you like most, and they have vegetarian food options.

Tea or coffee, snacks, and mineral water are also included.

Can I drink alcohol before diving?

NO. You should never drink alcohol before diving.

Is scuba diving dangerous?

As with any adventure sport, some risk is involved. Scuba diving is not dangerous if a diver seeks thorough training, follows safe diving guidelines, and uses proper gear. And most important, he dives within his experience level. Statistics show that recreational Scuba diving is about as safe as swimming. We encourage divers to approach the sport with an appropriate amount of respect.

I have made a discovery. Can I dive with qualified divers?

No. You can’t dive with certified divers because you’re not qualified. You must do a course and obtain your Open Water Diver certification first.

Can I wear my contact lenses?

Yes. Soft lenses can be worn.

Can my friends accompany me even if they don’t dive?

YEAH. Your friends or family can accompany you. It is a good day for them, too, and they can snorkel or relax on the beach or the boat while you dive.

What is the minimum age to dive?

8 years. Minors need written authorization from their parents or guardians to be able to dive with us.

And is there a maximum age to try diving?

The answer is no! As long as you are in good health and do not have any medical contraindications, you can try diving!

As a curiosity, I can tell you that a 78-year-old woman who was in perfect health did the try dive with us and had an incredible experience!

Can I fly after doing my try dive in Bali?

To be completely safe, you should wait 12 to 16 hours from your last dive before boarding a plane.

I have asthma. Is it possible to dive?

Some types of asthma are compatible with scuba diving, and others are not, for example, severe chronic Asthma. However, checking with your doctor to confirm whether you can dive and get medical clearance is highly recommended.

I have a cold and a cough. Can I dive?

If the sinuses are not blocked, you can dive. But if the sinuses are blocked, then you will have a problem equalizing the pressure in your ears, so it is recommended not to dive.

I am pregnant. Can I dive?

No. Because doctors know little about the effects of diving on the fetus, the recommendation is that women should avoid diving while pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Can the instructor take photos of me when I do the try dive?

We do not offer diving + photo packs. The instructor should focus on you, not the camera or other students. Your safety always comes first.

If you want to have a souvenir of the experience, you can consult and hire the service of a cameraman so that he can immortalize your memories.

Remarks

To enroll in the Discover Scuba Diving program, you need first to feel comfortable in the water and also be in good health. In addition, you will need to complete a Medical Questionnaire upon arrival at Southern Dreams Diving Club. If you have any medical history or condition, it doesn’t mean that you are not qualified to dive, but it will indicate the need for a medical assessment by a physician before diving.

Your dive medical clearance can either be done by your doctor back at home or here, in Candidasa and you must state you are ‘fit to dive.’

Why you should try diving

Perhaps you have already gone snorkeling and enjoy being in the water. You may also be fascinated by the underwater world and the natural environment and are now considering trying diving. The answer to why you should try diving is simple: it’s truly one of the best experiences in the world! If you want to learn more about why diving is so amazing, keep reading.

Reasons to try scuba diving:

1. You are about to experience a thrilling and enjoyable activity in a unique environment, our beloved blue ocean.

Humans predominantly move on land, but the experience of being underwater is truly unmatched. Observing marine life in its natural habitat is an extraordinary encounter that will be etched in your memory forever.

2. Discover new sensations, breathe underwater, and enjoy weightlessness.

Thanks to diving equipment, we can breathe underwater and defy the laws of nature. With the help of the right weights and breathing techniques, we can control our buoyancy and defy the law of gravity. These two factors, breathing and buoyancy, are the key to diving and provide unique sensations that can only be experienced through scuba diving. These sensations are truly remarkable and leave no one indifferent.

3. Feel the tranquility and peace.

Trust me, when you descend underwater, your worries remain on the surface, your mind relaxes, and there is only you with your breathing. You experience a sense of peacefulness that is hard to find anywhere else. As you go deeper, the colors fade, and the silence seems absolute until you learn to hear the rhythm of the ocean. It’s a feeling of tranquility that can be hard to describe. Diving is a great way to escape the stress of everyday life and find a sense of calm, like an underwater form of meditation.

4. Diving can help people overcome their fears and turn them into enjoyable experiences full of pleasure and fun

Feeling nervous when facing the unknown is a common experience. A try dive can help overcome fears, clear up doubts, and make one stronger in this sense. This is one of the reasons why many people become hooked on diving.

5. Explore a new world, the blue world—another great reason to try scuba diving.

Did you know that 70% of our planet is covered by water? Yes, you read it right – almost three quarters of the planet is water. Additionally, more than 230,000 species live in water, and new species are being discovered every day! With these facts, you can imagine the countless things you have yet to discover. Scuba diving allows you to explore a whole new world on the same planet.

6. Exercising while enjoying the underwater environment is a fantastic workout.

The best diver is not necessarily the strongest or the fastest, but rather the calmest. Although diving may not seem like a rigorous exercise, it actually engages all the muscles in the body against the water’s resistance, leading to increased blood circulation and a great cardiovascular workout. Furthermore, immersion in water helps burn calories to regulate body temperature, making diving a highly effective form of exercise. You don’t have to be a super athlete to try diving; you only need a calm mindset. So don’t be afraid to give it a try!

7. You can explore the ocean’s wonders while helping to preserve it.

Learning to dive is not only an amazing experience, but it also allows us to learn more about the ocean and marine life. It also raises awareness about the importance of preserving our oceans and marine environment. Moreover, by spending money on diving, we can contribute to protecting marine life and encourage locals to switch to more sustainable and stable activities like taking divers for dives instead of fishing. This way, we can help create more marine protected areas and support projects to recover and conserve our oceans.

Now you know why you should try scuba diving.

The try dive is often people’s first step when exploring the underwater world. This introductory experience can be a springboard into the incredible world of scuba diving and often marks the beginning of becoming a certified diver.

Be careful because diving can be a life-changing experience!

Don’t let anyone sway you. Give it a try and see for yourself!
